Passionflower flowers contain the flavonoid passiflorin, which acts on GABA receptors and produces a sedative effect. The alkaloids harman and norharman inhibit MAO release and promote serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine absorption, which improves mood and exerts antidepressant effects. Passionflower also has anticonvulsant properties. Peppermint contains a large amount of essential oil menthol, carotene, flavonoids, triterpenoid compounds, and various acids, which contribute to its anti-stress, calming, and spasmolytic actions.
